Since 2004, Madhushri Sandarsh has been combining her passion for yoga with love for kids, particularly differently abled ones. Being a certified yoga practitioner, she is aware of the impact the age-old discipline can have on a person. And, she shares the lessons with them for free.

Apart from volunteering at several balashramas in the city, Madhushri has been teaching students of Sophia's Opportunity School for the past three years.

Every Wednesday, from 8am to 10am, 200-odd students of Opportunity, located on the premises of Sophia High School on Palace Road, split into smaller groups.

Their enthusiasm is palpable as they try to contort their bodies and relax their minds under Madhushri's guidance. The asanas and exercises are tailor-made to suit the special children's needs.

"Most of the time, they are unable to do even a part of the asana themselves, but it is heartening to see them try. At every stage, it is important to remember that they need more patience and understanding than other children. With certain groups, I only make them do breathing exercises while others can be taught asanas."

Recalling how the behaviour of 18-year-old twin girls, who had a stubborn disposition, changed after a few sessions, Madhushri revealed that such positivity keeps her motivated.

"Two years ago, these girls would never participate in my sessions. Today, they take me by the arm to class. This change is encouraging. When it comes to children with special needs, a certain amount of aggression, anger or confusion comes out when you interact with them. That attitude must only be met with love and compassion," Madhushri added.

Sukanya V Rao, a teacher in the school for 28 years, said the yoga lessons have had a remarkable impact on students."Yoga plays a big role in their overall development, including concentration and memory power. Children with Down Syndrome pick it up fast and are also able to do some part of the asanas. Some teachers are present during the sessions and we encourage students to come to the stage of our auditorium and perform. This helps them become more confident," added Sukanya, who handles students aged between 14 and 21.

Shaila, mother of a 19year-old, said her daughter's behaviour has improved over the last few years. "Unfortunately , she doesn't get a chance to practise at home but I am told that she does it well. She is less likely to get provoked to anger and also has become more patient. Most importantly , it is a form of exercise that helps her keep fit," she added.
